Renting a moving lift: when, how and what does it cost?

When do you need a moving lift?
A moving lift isn't needed for every move, but in certain situations it's indispensable. The rule of thumb: if you live on the second floor or higher, without a spacious elevator in the stairwell, a moving lift is almost always the smartest choice. It saves enormous amounts of time (a move from three floors takes up to 60% less time with a lift) and it's safer, carrying heavy furniture through narrow staircases is the main cause of moving injuries and damage. A moving lift is also essential if you have large, unwieldy furniture that doesn't fit through the stairwell: a corner sofa, a double mattress, a piano or a large wardrobe. Even on the ground floor, a moving lift can be handy if the walking route to the truck is long or there are obstacles like gates or steps. A professional moving company assesses this during the inventory and advises whether a lift is needed.
Types of moving lifts and capacity
There are various types of moving lifts, each suitable for specific situations. The most common is the ladder lift: an inclined lift placed against the facade that transports items up and down via a container or platform. Standard ladder lifts reach 18-20 metres (approximately 6 floors) and have a load capacity of 200 to 400 kilos. For higher buildings, there are extended ladder lifts reaching 30 metres or more. A knee lift or rope lift is used when the facade is inaccessible or when there are obstacles such as trees or balconies. Most lifts fit through a standard window opening, but check this in advance. The platform typically measures 100 x 150 cm, spacious enough for a washing machine, fridge or three-door wardrobe. Communicate the specifications of your property (floor, facade type, window dimensions, obstacles) to the moving company so they bring the right type of lift.
Costs and permits
The costs of a moving lift vary depending on the type, height and duration. With most moving companies, a standard ladder lift up to 20 metres is included in the moving package or available as an option for €150 to €350 per day. Standalone lift rental without a moving company costs more: expect €200 to €500, depending on duration and type. An extended lift for higher buildings is more expensive: €300 to €600. Note: in many municipalities you need a permit to place a moving lift on the street, as it takes up parking space. You apply for this permit at the municipality, usually two to four weeks in advance. Costs vary per municipality from €25 to €100. Some municipalities also require traffic measures such as signs and barriers. A professional moving company typically arranges the permit for you, but check this when booking. Without a permit you risk a fine of €150 to €400.
Safety and practical tips
A moving lift is safe when correctly used by experienced personnel. Always leave the operation to professionals, a moving lift is not a toy and incorrect use can lead to serious accidents and damage. Check in advance whether the facade is sturdy enough: with old buildings or wooden window frames, extra caution is needed. Ensure the window through which the lift operates can be fully opened and that there is sufficient space to lift items from the platform inside. Remove curtains, plants and decorations from the windowsill. Protect the windowsill and frame with blankets or foam rubber. Ensure the street below the lift is cordoned off and passers-by don't walk underneath. In bad weather (strong wind, thunderstorms, ice), the lift may not be usable, discuss this scenario with your moving company in advance. Always plan an alternative in case the lift cannot be placed due to obstacles or weather conditions.
