A professional foundation: registrations and transparency
A reliable mover lets itself be verified. Ask for the Chamber of Commerce (KvK) registration and confirm it yourself via the trade register if you wish: an active registration number, a correct company name and a real business address are the first basics. A professional mover also carries its own business liability insurance, ask whether the company can show the policy on request, or at least confirmation that cover is current. For international moves a NIWO licence is mandatory; if a company operates cross-border without one, exercise caution. Beyond these formal requirements, what counts most is how transparent the company itself is. A good mover uses clear general terms, gives a written quote with clear specifications and doesn't shy from questions about insurance, liability or working methods. Ask for references, read independent reviews on Google and Trustpilot, and pay particular attention to how the company responds to negative experiences, an honest reply says more than a row of five-star ratings. Be careful with companies unwilling to give a written contract, lacking clear terms or evading questions about insurance and liability.
Insurance and liability
Insurance is a crucial point when choosing a moving company. Always ask about coverage: does the company offer all-risk insurance that protects your belongings against damage, loss and theft during the move? Check the deductible and maximum compensation per item and per move. Some companies only offer basic liability, meaning compensation for damage is limited to a fraction of the actual value. For valuable items such as art, antiques or electronics, it's wise to take out additional insurance. Have the moving company draw up an inventory list in advance and document the condition of your belongings with photos. This prevents disputes afterwards and ensures smooth handling of any damage.
Comparing quotes: price vs. quality
Always request multiple quotes and compare them carefully. Pay attention not just to price, but also to what is included. A cheap quote can turn out more expensive if material costs, insurance or (dis)assembly are not included. Ask for a detailed quote specifying hours, equipment, materials and extra services. An in-home assessment gives the most accurate picture, many companies offer this free of charge. Be wary of companies that quote a price over the phone without having seen your home. Check online reviews on platforms like Google, Trustpilot and social media. Pay particular attention to how the company handles complaints and negative experiences. A company that responds professionally to criticism shows maturity and customer focus.
What else should you pay attention to?
Beyond the formal foundations, insurance and price, there are other factors to consider. Ask about the team's experience: does the company work with permanent, trained movers or with changing temp workers? A permanent team knows the equipment, works more efficiently and handles your belongings more carefully. Check if the company has its own equipment or rents everything, own trucks and moving lifts indicate professionalism and willingness to invest. Ask about planning: can the company handle changes flexibly? How does the company deal with delays or unforeseen circumstances? A good moving company communicates clearly, is available for questions and gives you confidence that your move is in good hands. Trust your instincts: if communication is already difficult beforehand, that's a warning sign.
