Arranging parking for the moving truck: what to check in advance

Determine how much space is actually needed
Ask the moving company which vehicle will arrive and how much clear length is required to use doors, tail lift or ramp safely. A box van needs different space from a large truck; a moving lift also requires room beside or behind the vehicle. Check height restrictions, bollards, trees, overhead cables, narrow streets and vehicle weight limits. Take a photo from both directions and record the distance to the property. Do this at collection and delivery addresses. The driver can then assess the intended position beforehand instead of improvising in live traffic.
Check your municipality’s rules
Keeping a public parking space free with chairs or tape is not allowed everywhere. Temporarily reserving public space, placing signs or setting up a moving lift may require notification, exemption or permit. The process and lead time differ by municipality and sometimes by street. Check the municipal website or call the relevant desk with the vehicle, date, times and exact position. Ask who installs official signs and when this must happen. On private land, permission from the owner, manager or owners’ association is needed. Keep the confirmation and share relevant conditions with the planner.
Carrying distance adds up throughout the day
Twenty extra metres may sound minor, but the crew walks it again for every box, chair and cabinet. A long distance increases duration and exposes belongings to traffic, bicycles or wet ground. Report the realistic truck position, not just the address. Keep the route free of bins, bicycles and loose planters and protect the floor and entrance where needed. On a busy street, one person may need to monitor the surroundings while the team carries. The quote can then include additional walking or suitable equipment instead of discovering it during the job.
Do a final check the evening before
Check that signs are positioned correctly, the reserved area is clear and road works or refuse collection will not block the route. Remind neighbours of the time window and leave a phone number for questions. Send the planner a current photo if anything has changed. On the morning itself, keep keys and any permission documents available. If the space is occupied, do not start a confrontation; contact the agreed person or municipality. Fifteen minutes of checking the evening before can prevent an entire crew and truck from waiting while an alternative is found.
