Moving an apartment without a lift: how to avoid surprises
Document the entire carrying route
Do not record only the floor number. Measure the front door, narrowest passage, stair width, turns and the size of any suitable window or balcony. Photograph the route from the street to the home. Include galleries, internal doors, low ceilings and places where a large item must turn. Perform the same check at the destination. A sofa that leaves easily may still get stuck at the new home. Share information about entrance access, intercom and keys as well. These details allow the mover to decide what can stay assembled, what needs dismantling and whether an external lift genuinely helps.
A moving lift is a tool, not an automatic solution
A moving lift can avoid a great deal of stair carrying, but only if it can be positioned safely and legally. There must be space for the vehicle and lift, the window or balcony must be accessible and the ground suitable. Public space may require permission or a temporary traffic measure; rules differ by municipality. Check this well in advance. For a few items, dismantling and using the stairs can be quicker than setting up a lift. For a large household on a high floor, a lift may save hours. The right choice therefore depends on volume, floor, access and the number of large items, not on one standard rule.
Prepare furniture and shared areas
Remove loose shelves and drawers from cabinets and label fixings where dismantling is needed. Protect vulnerable corners, but do not wrap large furniture so heavily that it no longer fits through the door. Agree with the building manager whether the entrance may be protected temporarily and inform neighbours when the stairs will be busy. Always keep escape routes clear. Reserve a place downstairs where boxes can be grouped briefly without blocking the entrance. An organised staging point prevents movers from having to pass each other on the stairs with heavy loads.
A reliable quote uses more than a postcode
For an apartment without a lift, photos of access and contents are essential. State the floor, distance to the likely parking place, large furniture and whether you will pack yourself. Mention any attic, storage room or garage that must also be emptied. This allows realistic planning of crew, equipment and duration. A low estimate without these details may look attractive, but is more likely to create delays or additional work. Ask for a quote that visibly accounts for stairs, lift, dismantling and carrying distance.
