Temporary storage between homes: how to stay organised
Treat storage as part of the moving route
When the old home must be empty before the new one is available, the move has two transport moments. Plan them together. Record the collection date, expected storage period and possible delivery date. Check whether storage is charged by week, month or actual period, and whether collection and delivery are included. Allow for a changing completion date; a few days of flexibility prevents a rush. With storage as part of the move, the same inventory can be used for collection, storage and final delivery. That reduces the chance of part of the household returning at the wrong time.
Create three streams: immediate, storage and not moving
Do not pack the entire home in the same way. First create a set for the interim period: clothes, documents, medication, chargers, work items and essentials for children or pets. These do not go into storage. The second stream is the stored household. Number boxes and link them to a simple list with room and general contents. The third stream contains belongings that do not need to return to the new home. Separating them before loading avoids paying storage and a second transport for items that will eventually be discarded. Group items you may need and ask whether interim access is possible; with some storage methods, access requires moving the entire consignment.
Ask about conditions, access and cover
Ask whether the facility is dry, secure and suitable for your belongings. Wood, books, art and electronics need stable conditions and proper packing. Store mattresses and upholstered furniture clean and completely dry. Check which insurance applies during storage, what value is covered and how damage must be reported. Photograph fragile or valuable pieces before collection and keep the inventory outside the storage unit. Also ask who has access, how the consignment is sealed and whether you are notified before it is moved. Clear answers matter more than a label such as “premium storage”.
Plan the second moving day again
Delivery from storage is not an automatic repeat of collection day. Recheck the new address shortly beforehand: parking, lift, keys and rooms for large furniture. Share changes before the consignment is loaded. Make sure beds and wardrobes can go to the right rooms first and keep routes clear. Check the inventory on arrival and report a missing or damaged item immediately. This second preparation prevents temporary storage from ending in a pile of unassigned boxes and turns it into a controlled completion of the move.
